Tattoo Cover-Up – an alternative to removal

Tattoo Cover-Up: refresh your old tattooIn the last post I talked about literally covering up your tattoo for specific occasions when you do not want to remove a tattoo altogether. But, ‘tattoo cover-up’ is also a term tattoo artists use to describe a technique where they cover-up your old tattoo with a new one.

What has that got to do with tattoo removal you may well ask. Well, for a lot of people with tattoos it is not always an issue of getting rid of their tattoo altogether. You may be thinking of wanting to remove your tattoo because the image is now faded or because you no longer like the image. In this case, when it is not tattoos in general but your tattoo specifically you do not like, ‘tattoo cover-up’ is a viable alternative to total removal.

Many tattoo artists are now becoming very adept at performing cover-ups, and will help you by providing you with another image that you are happy with and can live with. usually the price is just the price of a tattoo. After all, in principle all that is being done is a new tattoo is being placed over an old one.

Take care, although that is the principle – it is still a skilled exercise. Be sure you find an artist who is experienced in tattoo cover-up techniques. As to see proof of their previous cover-ups. It is very difficult, if not impossible to cover-up a tattoo again.

Tattoo Cover Up Creams

There may come a time when for some or other reason or special occasion, such as a wedding or a job interview, you want to hide a very noticeable tattoo rather than removing it altogether. In which case what you need is a tattoo cover up cream of one brand or another.

Although there are a few different brands for you to choose from, they all usually rely on the same basic principles of application to enable you to completely mask your tattoo, and without destroying your clothes.

Because everyone’s skin tone is different, most cover up kits involve you mixing a paste from two differently coloured pastes, one light the other dark. This way you will be able to make a paste to match exactly your skin colour. You then use the past to literally cover up your tattoo, letting it dry fully.

Most good quality tattoo cover up creams are water resistant, but these also usually come with a spray that once applied ensures that the paste is also smudge resistant. And when the special occasion is over, you then simply apply a lotion that dissolves the paste and the spray-on protective layer to return your tattoo to its former glory.

Are You Needing to Remove Tattoos?

Many people get tattoos of one sort or another. And, there is always a time when it just seems like a great idea. Sadly, what seemed like a good idea one day can, and often does, turn out to be not such a great idea another day. Each year there are thousands of people in the United Kingdom who get tattoos, but there are also many who need to remove tattoos – for all sorts of reasons.

As skin specialists’ understanding of tattoo removal has advanced significantly in recent years, removing your tattoo is no longer as difficult as it once might have been. And, not only are there more techniques available nowadays, these techniques are themselves continuously improving.

The variety of tattoo removal techniques include: laser surgery where surgical lasers are used to break up the ink in the skin; various creams are available that penetrate the skin and break up the ink making the tattoo fade in time; dermabrasion involves a small sanding-like instrument removing the layers of skin that contain the ink; and sometimes the tattoo is literally cut out with the skin then being sewn back together.

The success of these various techniques depends on a variety of factors, from the colour used to the injection depth of the ink. As more and more people want to remove tattoos, so too there is a greater understanding of what works and what does not.

Laser Tattoo Removal

laser-tattoo-removalA common and very frequent technique that people choose for the removal of their tattoos is laser treatment.

The effectiveness of laser tattoo removal depends on a number of factors; including the size of the tattoo, and the various dyes used in colouring the tattoo. Obviously, the bigger the tattoo more treatments will be required. But, as laser treatment is directed at the skin’s pigmentation, the effectiveness of this treatment largely depends on the dyes used in colouring the tattoo, as well as the complexity of the colouring used in the specific design.

For example, through various tests and experiments carried out on different tattoos we know that certain dyes such as white, yellow, orange, and even some red and green dyes, are very hard to remove totally. Fluorescent and acrylic dyes have also proved to be more difficult to remove, and the skin may remain coloured following laser tattoo removal treatment.

Having decided on laser tattoo removal, the next thing to do is to visit a reputable clinic for a consultation. There, they will perform a test patch to determine how many treatments will be required to remove the tattoo, and how effective laser treatment will be for your particular tattoo. This will also give you an idea of the cost likely to be incurred.
